Painting In Snow

Hello all!

Here’s a weekly hello from my snowy part of the world. In this post, I’d like to touch base on a cool subject that’s close to my heart; snow! Check out this snow paint I finished up from my backyard. 👇👇

Here is a snapshot from the second session of my backyard snow painting. By the time I took the photograph, the clouds had covered quite densely, creating a lot less dimension in the scene.

This is a huge benefit of painting from life- If I were to paint from this photograph, I wouldn’t have that much to go off of. Being outside longer allows the eyes to study how the light moves and changes a subject.

Look at some palette snapshots from this and other snow paints this week!

A lot of color mixing is just experimenting subtle variations of a color.

A lot of painting in snow is working with high value contrasts- i.e. things either look really light or really dark. This can have a really cool effect, but it’s also good to hold that concept in the back of your head so your painting still maintains a good amount of dimension within the frame.

Have a colorful day!
