Windy Beach Days

Hello all!

Oh windy days. I love the wind, but (plein air + wind) calls for a strategic approach. Wind can be tricky, temperamental, and fascinating all wrapped up into one element. Wind is something that cannot be seen, so how can it be translated into something visual?

To answer this question, let's think about what wind does; it moves the tangible things in its environment. Whether it's a soft breeze coming from an open window, the acceleration of a car, or a huge gust during a storm, the wind can have all different effects on its surrounding environment.

Here's a closer look at my process…

These are the days that I bust out the duck tape and rocks. I have learned from many failed past experiences that a gust of wind can cause the whole palette (and sometimes easel) to blow over. And sand-filled palette isn’t fun.

This is my windy day formula:

  • Duct Tape = to secure palette to easel

  • Rocks = to weigh down the back and legs of the easel

    And now have added:

  • Hold onto easel when collapsing. (Like the WHOLE TIME!!!)

I took my hand off for one minute to put on my backpack, and my finished painting went facedown in the sand! (cue song *Another One Bites The Dust*)

And so, lessoned learned. 🙃 Try again tomorrow.

Have a colorful day!

xxCass
