Adding A Little Red

Hello all!

Color theory is one of the many things in painting that constantly intrigues me. How different colors can vary when mixed, layered, or placed next to another can make a huge impact on a piece. It seems the more I learn about colors and how they are related to another, the more questions I have. Do you ever have an interest like that?

Most reds and even some blues I tend to use in moderation. To get a specific color combination, it may take ten times the amount of white, yellow, or green to the amount of red. The basic understanding of color mixing can be very confusing at first, so it’s good to treat it as an ongoing experiment.

In this painting, you can see that I started out with a red wash over the whole canvas. I don't tone every painting, but I believe this helped balance the heavy red of the boat throughout the piece.

Here’s also a cool shot I took on location. The lighting was very warm as the sun was getting low.

Have a colorful day,
