Evening Reflections At The Dock

Hello all!

Water is always fun to paint. It’s always a challenge, and at times, frustrating- but never dull! Both from life and from photographs reflections can look almost like mirror images. Once in a while, artists can replicate these reflections onto canvas. However, most of the time, mirror images do not translate very well in a painting.

Water is typically smoother and has more movement than whatever it’s reflecting. This understanding will ultimately cause water reflections to have softer edges and looser brushstrokes.

And here is a process picture mid-paint. It was hard to get a good photo here because the sun was so bright! (This caused a bunch of sky holes and leaf shadows to speckle down.)
