Angles and edges

Hello all!

It is always good practice to draw and paint boats when working outdoors. Quite often, I get used to working with nature’s shapes; i.e. trees, flowers, water, fields, etc... These are all wonderful things to paint, however, I can’t help noticing the similarities in nature when painting. These subjects tend to have softer edges, are more shape-based, and have less harsh angles.

Adding structural forms of subject matter within a landscape can provide a wider contrast in types of edges and angles. Checkout ‘Docked Boats’ below to see what I mean! :)

Non-nature based subjects (man made) are made up of sharper angles and edges as well as more linear strokes. This is a huge difference that challenges me when approaching a painting. Incorporating nature and man made subjects in one painting allows me to work on both skills, not to mention understand how both things can work together in a piece.
