Raining Sunshine

Hello all!

Look at this sun raining upon Presque Isle! (This weather is sometimes a natural phenomena in my corner of the world.) :) Most of my paint excursions are typically snowy or cloudy- so this was good practice in the sun.

Here is a shot of the full scene to get an idea of the environment. All beaches have similarities but it’s good to keep in mind things that make one beach setting distinct from another, too.

In this painting, I tried to focus on the trees and tall grasses that grow in plenty here.

Sometime a messy palette can be beneficial to a painting, but other times it can overwhelm a piece in the works. Towards the end of this session, the palette became too chaotic - so I knew it was time to either stop or scrape to make room for other mixtures.

I find it important to ask myself questions about my palette throughout the entire session. This helps me better understand my process and know what things I want to keep or tweak in the future.

In these next two close-ups, you can see final brushwork closely. I also used different palette knives to paint or scrape away wet paint on the canvas.

Have a colorful day,
